At Pennington County Humane Society, we are dedicated to providing essential services that benefit both animals and the community. Our commitment to serving homeless, abused, and unwanted animals drives our programs. On this page, you will find detailed information about our key services, including adoption, foster care, and community education, all designed to promote animal welfare and enrich the lives of pets and their future families.
Adoption Services
Our Adoption Services help connect loving families with homeless animals in need of a forever home. We provide a warm, welcoming environment for potential adopters to meet our animals and learn about their unique personalities. Each adoption includes a thorough screening process to ensure that our animals are placed in safe, loving environments. Additionally, we offer post-adoption support to help new pet owners transition smoothly into their new roles.
Adopting an animal from us means you are giving a second chance to a homeless pet. Our thorough screening ensures a great match, and our ongoing support helps you adapt to your new furry family member, making it a rewarding experience for both of you.

Foster Care Program
The Foster Care Program is essential for providing temporary homes for animals awaiting adoption. Volunteers open their hearts and homes to care for these animals, giving them a chance to thrive in a loving environment. Foster families play a critical role in socializing and caring for animals, which increases their chances of finding a forever home. We support our fosters with resources and supplies to ensure a positive experience for both the foster family and the animals.
By joining our Foster Care Program, you are making a significant impact on the lives of animals in need. Your temporary home can help socialize pets, making them more adoptable. We provide all necessary supplies and support to help you through the fostering process.

Community Education
is a vital service that aims to promote responsible pet ownership and awareness of animal welfare issues. We offer outreach programs to educate the public about proper animal care, the importance of spaying/neutering, and ways to support local shelters. By empowering our community with knowledge, we can work together to improve the lives of animals and reduce the number of homeless pets in our area.
Our Community Education programs are designed to empower you with knowledge about animal care and welfare. By participating, you help create a more informed community that values and respects all animals, which contributes to a healthier, happier environment for pets and their owners.

- Community involvement opportunities
Microchipping
Dog and cat microchipping is a simple procedure that can be performed. Pet microchips are very small, roughly the size of a grain of rice and are inserted just beneath your pet's skin between their shoulder blades. Inserting the microchip is quick and safe similar to a routine shot.
A pet microchip uses a radio frequency known as RFID to transmit the ID number stored on the microchip to the scanning device that reads the pet's unique number and displays it. The facility that scans your pet can then enter the microchip number into the Universal Pet Microchip Lookup tool online so we can reunite you with your pet. We offer lifetime registered chips for $35 by appointment
Lower Income Services
The Pennington County Humane Society is making an impact in Northern Minnesota by addressing the scarcity of low-income resources related to pet care. By hosting spay/neuter clinics and low-income vaccine clinics, PCHS is not only helping to control the pet population but also providing essential services to the community. These clinics are a vital resource for pet owners who might otherwise not have access to such services. Announcements and updates about upcoming clinics are conveniently shared through the society's website and Facebook page, ensuring that the community is well-informed and can benefit from these services.
PET FOOD PANTRY
The Pennington County Humane Society manages and maintains a Pet Food Pantry for residents of NorthWestern MN when they need a little help providing food for their pets. Our pantry is a source of sustenance for pets on a short-term, emergency basis.
To obtain pet food from our pantry, we ask pet owners complete our online form, and bring a copy of their driver’s license to our Pet Food Pantry located in the Pennington County Humane Society.
We understand that pet owners may face financial hardships at times, after three months, we will require proof of unemployment, disability or government assistance. While we strive to provide pet food, and our pantry is stocked through the generosity of our donors we are unable to guarantee the availability of food. Please call 218-681-8045 for additional inquiries about pet food.
