Adoption Information - Pennington County Humane Society

The adoption process is a vital aspect of our mission at Pennington County Humane Society. By providing loving homes to homeless, abused, and unwanted animals, we not only save lives but also enrich the lives of families and individuals in our community. This page outlines the information you need to know to adopt a pet and become part of our compassionate mission.

Understanding the Adoption Process

Adopting a pet is a significant decision that requires careful consideration. At the Pennington County Humane Society, we strive to make the adoption process as smooth and informative as possible. To begin, potential adopters will fill out an application/terms and conditions contract. Our dedicated staff will conduct an open conversation interview to further discuss your adoption goals and see if the potential pet will be a good fit. We believe that finding the right match between the pet and the owner is crucial for a successful long-term relationship.

Pet Adoption

The Pennington County Humane Society animal shelter is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Animal Health (license # MN139638) for up to 27 dogs/puppies & up to 60 cats/kittens. The shelter is more often than not filled to the maximum allowed by the license. While we try to keep the available animals listed online, we may have missed a few – so if you don’t see what you want, please give us a call.
To adopt from Pennington County Humane Society, you must be over 21 years of age. You must own the home where you are living or have a signed statement from your landlord permitting you to have a pet in a leased or rented home
Cats must be kept indoors at all times in City Limits unless leashed & accompanied by a responsible adult. Many mobile home parks have their own set of rules, so please check with the park manager before attempting to adopt them.
Many cities have ordinances in regard to pets that must be followed. This includes proper vaccinations & licensing. Some communities may restrict the number of pets allowed in each household. Be sure to check your local ordinances before attempting to adopt.
All adoptions must be done by the person with who the pet will be living the majority of the time. We do not allow adopting pets as gifts for other people. You may, however, pay the adoption fee for a pet & we will provide a “gift certificate” which allows the recipient to adopt without additional cost. The recipient must meet the guidelines listed above to adopt. Adoption fees are non-refundable.

What to Expect After Adoption

Bringing a new pet into your home can be both exciting and challenging. After adoption, we provide guidance on how to help your new furry friend adjust to their new environment. Each animal has its unique personality, history, and needs, so we offer personalized advice based on the pet you adopt. Expect a transition period; it may take time for your pet to feel comfortable and secure in their new home. We encourage adopters to be patient and understanding during this adjustment phase. Additionally, we can provide information on responsible pet ownership, including tips, socialization techniques, and health care information. Our goal is to ensure a successful integration of your new pet into your family life, allowing both the animal and the owner to thrive together.
