Frequently Asked Questions

How can I adopt a pet?

To adopt a pet, visit us during our adoption hours or check our website for available animals. Our staff will guide you through the adoption process.

What types of animals do you have?

We have a variety of animals including dogs, cats, and occasionally other small animals. Our intakes change frequently, so check back often!

How can I get involved with volunteering?

You can get involved by filling out a volunteer application on our website or visiting us to learn more about our volunteer opportunities.

Pennington County Humane Society a kill or no-kill facility?

The terms “kill” and “no-kill” are very misleading. Pennington County Humane Society is a limited-intake shelter. We do qualify for "No-Kill" status. However, we have a licensed veterinarian who humanely euthanizes animals in certain situations. These situations include aggression toward people, severe aggression toward other animals, ongoing or chronic health issues(which we are unable to treat), and injuries beyond treatment.

Can I bring my pet to Pennington County Humane Society if I no longer want it or can no longer care for it?

This depends on several factors, the main one being whether or not we have space for your pet. Since we cannot predict when an adoption will occur, which will open up space, we can’t make any promises as to when, we can take your pet. We do have an online surrender form to fill out and encourage people to find placement outside the shelter environment if possible. Surrenders are by appointment only.

Can I bring my pet to Pennington County Humane Society for vaccinations, medical treatment or to be spayed/neutered?

Pennington County Humane Society does not have a veterinarian on site. However, you may call us, and we will give you the phone numbers of veterinarians in the area who can provide these services. We host vaccination clinics and spay/neuter clinics throughout the year.  We will post online when we are scheduling them.

“The staff at this shelter truly care about the animals. They helped me find the perfect companion in my time of need.”
